Our almost 3 year-old Avery likes to hear stories. As I put her down to bed we usually read a book or two. Recently, she wanted me to begin telling her stories instead of reading them.
She has been asking to tell her more stories about Jesus. This has been really fun, especially as a dad who dreams for his kids to know Jesus and to have a vibrant faith.
I’ve hit some interesting snags, though. What Jesus stories are appropriate to share to a 3 year old?
One of my favorite stories from the Gospels is when Jesus raises the dead son of the widow from Nain (Luke 7). But at this point, we haven’t crossed the bridge of sharing with Avery that people die.
How about the story of the Adulterous woman in John 8? Nah, I’ll pass on explaining that for a few years.
How about the healing of the demoniac from the Gadarenes? Nightmares…
Calling the Pharisees “a brood of vipers”? It wouldn’t take long for Avery to call her brother that.
Though there may be plenty of Jesus stories to tell to Avery now, the list is not comprehensive. It goes to show that Jesus’ mission was not tucked away in sanitized places, away from the massive problems of his day. Jesus led a gutsy movement; his followers need guts to follow him today.
